  • Pack Enough Food and Drinking water:

The hike is quiet strenuous, you must have enough drinking water and some snacks.

  • Hire a Porter:

Poarter assists you carry your gorilla trekking gear containing water, camera and lunch. This will drain to an extent that you may fail to make it to the mountain gorillas. A porter is hired for only $10-$15. This is a direct creation of employment to local communities and is a great pillar  to conservation of gorillas and their habitat.

  • Put on Proper footwear:

Hiking boots that fit above the ankle is highly recommended! At certain points during the trek, you walk through ankle-deep mud. If possible, waterproof boots can do better.

  • Protective garden gloves:

Socks protect your ankle and garden gloves protect your hands as pave way through the jungle.

  • Extra Camera Battery and Memory Card:

An hour with mountain gorillas in their natural habitat is an exciting moment! You can take a ton of photos and videos. Photographing starts from the time you leave your lodge in the moment until you return. Flash is not allowed, it disorganizes the gorillas.

  • Speak up about your hiking preferences:

Depending on your level of fitness, the park guides will assign you to a gorilla group in your ability to reach. Some gorilla groups are far, and others are close to the park boundaries, but it’s not a guarantee that you will see then in a short time because they move while searching for food.

Where to Go Gorilla Trekking in East Africa?

Gorilla tracking takes place in the following National Parks;

  • Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Located in southwestern Uganda, about 10 hours’ drive from Kampala or Entebbe Airport, Bwindi is home to about 500 mountain gorillas, which is half of the remaining total population in the whole world. There are currently over 16 habituated gorilla groups available for tracking by tourists. Gorilla tracking is the main tourist activity in Bwindi National Park. Other things to do include gorilla habituation experience, filming, bird watching, forest walk, Batwa Experience and community tours among others. For foreign non-residents, each gorilla permit costs US$700, and gorilla habituation is US$1500 per person, and must be booked in advance because they are on a very high demand throughout the year!

  • Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Not far from Bwindi Impenetrable National Park we find Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, another home to mountain gorillas in Uganda, we currently one habituated group known as Nyakagezi. Gorilla trekking in Mgahinga National Park is most preferred because it’s less strenuous, light bamboo forest, thus rewards you with clear pictures! Other things to do in Mgahinga include caves exploration, Batwa Trail, golden monkey tracking, community tours, mountain hiking, birding and forest walk among others. Each gorilla permit also costs US$700 for foreign Non-residents!

  • Virunga National Park Congo

Virunga National Park is located in Eastern DR Congo. The park can be excessed through Goma border in Rwanda or Bunagana border on Uganda side. It is mainly popular for gorilla tracking, with big gorilla groups and many silverbacks. Each gorilla permit is US$400.

  • Volcanoes National Park Rwanda

This is the most expensive gorilla safari destination in World. To go gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, you must pay US$1500 per person for one hour experience! The park is located 2-hour drive from Kigali Airport, thus, creating possibilities of 1-day gorilla tour packages. Other tourist activities in Volcanoes National Park include golden monkey tracking, adventurous hike to Dian Fossey Tombs, birding, mountain hiking, cultural tours and many more.

  • Kahuzi Biega National Park

The Kahuzi-Biega National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site near Bukavu town in eastern DR Congo, located near the western bank of Lake Kivu and the Rwandan border. With an area of 6,000 sq km, Kahuzi-Biega is one of the biggest national parks in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is famous for Eastern Low-land gorilla tracking.
